Founded over 230 years ago, Corney & Barrow is among the oldest independent Wine Merchants in the UK. Edward Bland Corney, opened our first shop on Old Broad Street, London, supplying a small yet delectable collection of Bordeaux wines, Port and Sherry. Our headquarters are still based in the City of London, keeping us close to our history and cherished roots.
Since those early days, Corney and Barrow has seen considerable national and international expansion and we now have operations in North Yorkshire, Edinburgh, Singapore and Hong Kong, as well as shops in Newmarket and Ayr (through the acquisition of Whighams In 1994 where the 250 year old cellars still house some of the finest wines in the world).
Hong Kong and Singapore have been a huge success thus far, expanding our Private, Trade and On-Trade clients. A fusion of British wine merchant tradition and Asian flair promises a fabulous future.
We believe that our success lies firmly in our history and heritage. Without Edward Corney’s humble wine merchant beginnings in 1780, we would of course not be here today. His hand picked selection of Bordeaux wines, Sherry and Port were so well received that within a few years he had to call on his cousin Robert Barrow for help. Corney & Barrow was born. Still privately we keep that family run feel in all that we do, basing our business on relationships and adapting with the years to supply the best examples of wine in every price range.
In both 1998 and 1999 Corney & Barrow (Broker Services) Ltd received the Queen’s Award for Export - an exceptional achievement for an importing wine company. HRH The Prince of Wales paid a visit to Corney & Barrow to present the award himself.
Our Royal Warrants
The Royal Warrant, established in 1912, was created as a mark of recognition to an individual or company that has provided a service or product to The Royal Family for at least 5 years. Warrants are highly prized, recognising high quality and excellence and we consider it an immense privilege. Corney & Barrow currently hold two such warrants, one from HM Queen Elizabeth II and another from HRH The Prince of Wales. Formerly, we held a warrant from the late HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.
There are around 850 Royal Warrant Holders today, representing a large and diverse range of industry and trade.’ We are the only wine company to have held three Royal Warrants concurrently – which is something we are most proud of.
